Working Yourself Out of a Job (Pleasing Christ in the Workplace)

Have you ever had days where you want to pack up your briefcase walk out the door and never look back? Honestly, I have. All of us probably have. But, it’s our attitude that’s key to determining our actions. And it’s our behavior that indicates the health of our spiritual heart when it comes to our work.

Ephesians 6:5-6 says,

Bondservants, be obedient to those who are your masters according to the flesh, with fear and trembling, in sincerity of heart, as to Christ; not with eye service, as men-pleasers, but as bondservants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart.

The context of the verse, the relationship of slaves to masters, also applies to supervisor—subordinate relationships in the workplace. We are not to work to please ourselves; we work to please the Lord. The passage then continues:

“With goodwill doing service, as to the Lord, and not to men, knowing that whatever good anyone does, he will receive the same from the Lord, whether he is a slave or free. And you, masters, do the same things to them, giving up threatening, knowing that your own Master also is in heaven, and there is no partiality with Him.” (Ephesians 6:7-9)

Scripture is beautifully clear on how we are to think and act in the workplace. Now ask yourself this: “What did I learn regarding my relationship with God as a result of how I responded to what happened at work today?” Are you spiritually healthy or ailing in this essential area of life? Invite God to help you make the necessary adjustments to do you work in a way that honors Him.
