The Irresponsible Adult Child

More than ever, adult children are moving back home with Mom and Dad. Many college graduates have experienced difficulty finding jobs during a recovering economy. They’re facing competition with job candidates who have more experience.

If your older children come back home, look at the opportunity as a blessing. This second time at home could give you an opportunity to shape ONE THING they really want to do with their lives.

During this time of transition, it’s important to offer advice and counsel.

How can you help your son or daughter find their ONE THING?

  1. Provide emotional support – It’s likely your child will be frightened and worried they may never find the job they want or ever get out on their own. Don’t add to the pressure. Instead, give them a release, an attentive ear and let them know you’re there to support them emotionally.
  2. Be a source of encouragement – Focus less on what they can’t (or won’t) do and more on the things they can do. Help them to think outside the box and stimulate new ideas to consider. This process can help them discover their purpose.
  3. Offer your friendship – You’re still their parent, but your role is different now. You’re far less the rule-setter and far more the relationship builder. Give them friendship. That dynamic will create opportunities for you to give needed advice.
  4. Deliver your influence – Now is a time for your son and daughter to see you as a responsible adult from their new, young adult perspective. Remember this as you interact with them and continue to be a role model for them.

30-Day Challenge

If you could do ONE THING and know that it would make a significant, lasting, possibly life-changing difference in your life, would you do it? Dr. Carlson shares the power of ONE THING and why you should get started doing your ONE THING today.
