11 biblical questions to ask before your next decision
Every day you’re faced with decisions, and every one of them—big or small—moves your life in a direction. If you want to live according to God’s intentions, the way you make those decisions matters deeply.
You’ve probably asked, “How can I know if this decision aligns with God’s will for me?”
God hasn’t left you guessing. He’s provided clear standards in His Word and practical wisdom to help you walk in obedience. One of the most helpful tools I’ve used—and that I encourage you to use—is what I call, “The Integrity Test.”
God’s Word Leads the Way
When a choice feels emotionally or spiritually significant, it’s important to pause and seek clarity. God’s Word gives us that clarity. Psalm 119:105 reminds us, “Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path” (NIV).
But even after receiving instruction for a decision in Scripture, we often benefit from slowing down and examining the situation more deeply. That’s where these 11 questions come in.
God will never lead you to make a choice in life that will violate His Word.
When His truth becomes your foundation, these questions become practical guides for walking in step with His plans.

11 Questions That Will Clarify Your Decision
1. The Vision Question
Will this decision move me toward a life goal or help solve a problem?
Proverbs 29:18 says, “Where there is no vision, the people perish: but he that keepeth the law, happy is he” (KJV).
Living intentionally begins with clarity. If your decision moves you toward the life God is calling you to, it deserves prayerful attention.
2. The Mission Question
Does this decision support my life mission—the reason for my existence?
“Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven” (Matthew 5:16 NIV).
When life feels unclear, it’s often because the mission has been forgotten. Rediscovering it brings fresh direction.
3. The Integrity Question
Will this decision affect any commitment or vow I’ve made?
“When you make a vow to God, do not delay to fulfill it” (Ecclesiastes 5:4 NIV).
God’s intentions never include abandoning your promises. A life of obedience honors the commitments you’ve made before Him and others.
4. The Common Sense Question
Do the results of this decision make sense?
“The prudent give thought to their steps” (Proverbs 14:15 NIV).
God gave you a mind. Sometimes the most spiritual thing you can do is apply sanctified common sense.

5. The Others First Question
How will this decision affect my family, friends, or coworkers?
“Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves” (Philippians 2:3 NIV).
Good decisions benefit you. They also reflect love and care for the people around you.
6. The Legal Question
Is this decision in line with the law of the land?
“Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities…” (Romans 13:1 NIV).
God is orderly. His will is not expressed through lawlessness, but through a spirit of order and respect.
7. The Cost Question
What will this decision cost me?
“Suppose you want to build a tower. You would first sit down and figure out what it costs. Then you would see if you have enough money to finish it” (Luke 14:28 GW).
Every yes comes with a trade-off. Count the cost to be wise in your stewardship.
8. The Motive Question
What do I gain from this decision?
“All a person’s ways seem pure to them, but motives are weighed by the Lord” (Proverbs 16:2 NIV).
As you ask yourself this question, be honest with yourself about how it aligns with what God values most.

9. The Timing Question
Is this the best time to make this decision?
“There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens” (Ecclesiastes 3:1 NIV).
Even wise decisions need God’s timing to be most effective. Think of waiting as an opportunity for discernment instead of delay.
10. The Knowledge Question
Do I have enough information to move forward?
“The heart of the discerning acquires knowledge…” (Proverbs 18:15 NIV).
God’s wisdom is often revealed through thoughtful preparation. Learn what you can—and then step forward in faith.
11. The Commitment Question
Do I plan to stick by my decision?
“Let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No,’ ‘No’…” (Matthew 5:37 NIV)
This is where your integrity is revealed. If you commit, follow through—with courage and consistency.
Avoid Self-Deception in Decision-Making
When a decision feels exciting, emotionally compelling, or spiritually appealing, it’s easy to see what we hope to see. But when we slow down and submit our thinking to God’s Word and these questions, we create space for discernment, peace, and alignment with God’s intentions.
You have His Word, and that takes the guesswork out of His will for our lives. Use these 11 questions to help you apply His truth with wisdom, faith, and integrity—so that your decisions reflect the life God is shaping in you.
