Are you happy?

Unshakable Joy in an Unstable World

What makes you happy? I asked our listeners that question, and their answers came fast—a grandchild’s generosity, a good drive home with the radio on, a prayer that finally got answered, a daughter who forgave her mom for a few harsh words. Good stuff. Real stuff.

And I noticed a common theme: happiness doesn’t stick around. It shows up when something goes your way, and it leaves the second things change. I watched that play out after the last election. People whose candidate won felt happy. People whose candidate lost didn’t. We place happiness on a lot of external things.

When we turn to Scripture, we find something different. Happiness and joy are not the same thing. Mixing them up will wear you out. Happiness is a reaction. It was never built to last. Joy is so much more.

Deep Roots

Jeremiah put it this way: “Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, And whose hope is the Lord. For he shall be like a tree planted by the waters, Which spreads out its roots by the river, And will not [a]fear when heat comes; But its leaf will be green, And will not be anxious in the year of drought, Nor will cease from yielding fruit” (Jeremiah 17:7–8 NKJV).

Even in the heat—even when circumstances turn hard—the leaf stays green because the roots go deeper than the weather.

Now let me be careful here, because joy doesn’t mean pretending everything’s fine. As Scripture reminds us, “Be happy with those who are happy and weep with those who weep” (Romans 12:15 NLT).

Joy and grief live in the same life—sometimes in the same week. If you’re weeping right now, that’s not you failing at faith. Joy isn’t the absence of tears. It’s what holds you up underneath them.

Staying Green in the Heat

One caller told me she’s been in and out of court for the last two and a half years. She’s walked through addiction, legal trouble, and time behind bars. By every measure the world uses—freedom, stability, a clean record—her life has been about as far from “happy” as it gets.

And she was rejoicing.

She said she still has to go to court, and she still knows God is with her. That’s a tree with roots planted deep, staying green in the heat.

Where Does Your Joy Come From?

So let me ask you again, what makes you happy? And here’s the harder one underneath it—where does your joy come from?

If you’re waiting for your circumstances to line up before you let yourself feel steady, you’ll be waiting a long time. Circumstances don’t line up. They didn’t for that caller. But joy was never waiting on your circumstances to begin with. It’s already there, planted deep, if your trust is in Christ.

So here’s your one thing to do today. Name one thing that’s true about God no matter what’s happening around you. His faithfulness. His presence. The fact that He hasn’t left, even with that court date still on the calendar.

Thank Him for that. Out loud, if you can. That’s joy.

You don’t need better circumstances to have joy. You need roots planted in the right place. Start there, today.

Explore “Joy That Holds You” — a 7-Day Devotional

Over the next seven days, you’ll dig into a joy that doesn’t rise and fall with your circumstances—the same anchored joy of the Lord we just talked about. Each day gives you a scripture focus, a short reflection, a simple next step, and a prayer to help you stand on God’s joy, right where you are.
