A Godly Role Model

ONE THINGS for Dad

Society today isn’t really that different than it was in Bible times. There were adulterers, liars and murderers then, just as there are now. One man in particular, David, committed all of these despicable acts, yet served as a godly role model for his son, Solomon.

So what set him apart? David loved God, acknowledged his mistakes and was quick to ask for forgiveness. In his last days, David instructed Solomon to live his life according to the ways of the Lord.

Deuteronomy 4:9-10 encourages us to teach our children God’s ways of doing life:

“But watch out! Be careful never to forget what you yourself have seen. Do not let these memories escape from your mind as long as you live! And be sure to pass them on to your children and grandchildren. Never forget the day when you stood before the Lord your God at Mount Sinai, where he told me, ‘Summon the people before me, and I will personally instruct them. Then they will learn to fear me as long as they live, and they will teach their children to fear me also.’”

Fathers, you have the honor of teaching your children to follow God’s Word. Here are some ONE THINGS for you as you serve as a picture of God’s love to your children and grandchildren:

  • Teach and instruct them in what the Bible says.
  • Demonstrate what you have taught them so that they put what they learn into practice.
  • Take time today to share one important life lesson with your son or daughter.
