So… you’ve been dating for a while, and you’re thinking: “Yeah, this is the one.” That’s great, but are you ignoring any red flags? You know, those really important things you may never accept about each other?
Ten Reasons Not to Get Married
Your life success may depend on it!
“I know I’ve met my soul mate…”
“We have so much in common…”
Or, my favorite and most heard: “I’m just so much in love…”
In my years as a relationship counselor in the office and on the air, I think I’ve heard all the reasons why people want to be married, and they’re largely based on feelings. That’s to be expected. But making such a vital decision primarily on feelings usually leads to unrealistic, and unfulfilled expectations. And it can ultimately become the first stepping stone toward divorce.
But what if you considered—before the wedding day—some key reasons why you shouldn’t get married? I actually came up with a list of ten reasons. If you’re single, or in a relationship that could be heading toward a proposal, these are especially for you. Take them seriously, as though your life success depends on it. It just might.
inTENtionals: Please do not marry if
- You are unwilling to put the needs of another person above your own.
- You are easily offended, carry grudges and are unwilling to forgive.
- You are an abusive person (Mentally, emotionally and physically).
- You are unwilling to commit.
- You have an unresolved addiction problem.
- Your career is the most important thing in your life.
- You do not share the same beliefs, values, life priorities or vision.
- You are unwilling to be an active partner sexually with your spouse.
- You are unwilling to agree on an approach for handling finances, children and life decisions.
- You expect your spouse to change after you get married.
These and other vital issues in your life can be faced and addressed proactively as you seek to please God with who you are and in all you do. At Intentional Living, we’re here to help with teaching, resources, the Intentional Journey. We want to help you, “Figure out what will please Christ, and then do it.” (Ephesians 5:10, The Message)
