Heather Pipkin Gray grew up in South Carolina. She moved to the lowcountry in 1998 when she came to Charleston Southern University as a freshman. That same year, while students at CSU, she met David Gray and they were married in 2001.
Heather graduated from the university in 2002 with a bachelor of arts in speech communications. David commissioned into the US Air Force as an Air Field Operations officer and they spent the next 11 years traveling the world and enjoying God’s abundant blessings. Together they have three children; Nyah, 9, Garrett, 6, and Ava, 4.
In March of 2012, David deployed to Afghanistan as an Air Liason Officer attached to the 4th Infantry Division, 4th Brigade combat team from Fort Carson, Colorado. During the deployment, Heather and David began writing a couples’ devotional for military spouses entitled “Faith, Hope, Love & Deployment.” They were excited about what God was showing them during their separation.
On August 8, 2012, David was killed by a suicide bomber who attacked his unit on their way to the Governor’s compound outside Combat Outpost Fiaz in the Kunar province.
In the months that followed, Heather has started Finish Strong Ministries…a 501c3 committed to sharing the gospel and a message of hope with people around the world. Her story of resiliency and dependence on the Lord has reached audiences in numerous states and three countries…everyone from faculty and staff at the United States Air Force Academy, to children and missionaries in Haiti and the Dominican Republic.
As much as we would like it to be, life is not always easy or fair for Christ followers. Giesbrecht learned this truth firsthand but also discovered that
from the depths of past pain, it is possible to be raised up. It is possible to exchange hurt for hope. Trusting God in the midst of a life turned upside down is essential for survival, and climbing out of the pits of despair would be impossible without Him. God is capable of taking our losses and mistakes and turning them into something remarkably beautiful if we just let Him.
Giesbrecht’s own story began with her conversion to Christ more than 30 years ago. Once a rebellious teenager, alcoholic and drug addict, she
knows the difficulties that come with overcoming physical addictions. However, that is just the beginning of her incredible testimony of faith and resilience. A cancer survivor, Giesbrecht fought stage 4 lymphoma and knows the heartbreak of disappointment, discouragement and disease. She encourages others that they, too, can overcome.
Recently widowed after 28 years of marriage, Giesbrecht has walked through the valley of the shadow of death after finding her husband immediately after a motorcycle accident that took his life. From the depths of these experiences, her desire is for believers to be set free from past hurts, to be healed and to be whole emotionally.
