Whatever happens, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ. Philippians 1:27 NIV)
For the month of May, Dr. Randy Carlson is giving us, “Today’s Word for Your Life.” And as you can see from the above title, today’s word is GOSPEL.
There will always be things in this life that catch us completely unprepared. They may bring joy, or they may bring sorrow. They may bring life, or they may bring death. It could be sickness. It could be loss of a job or finding an even better job. This verse is the prep for the unprepared.
“Whatever happens.” This includes the coronavirus and all of its related consequences. Since the apostle Paul was the one delivering this “whatever,” let’s take a look at his life to see whether this was a theological imperative, or a life imperative (you should already know the answer…)
I have worked much harder, been in prison more frequently, been flogged more severely, and been exposed to death again and again. Five times I received from the Jews the forty lashes minus one. Three times I was beaten with rods, once I was pelted with stones, three times I was shipwrecked, I spent a night and a day in the open sea, I have been constantly on the move. I have been in danger from rivers, in danger from bandits, in danger from my fellow Jews, in danger from Gentiles; in danger in the city, in danger in the country, in danger at sea; and in danger from false believers. I have labored and toiled and have often gone without sleep; I have known hunger and thirst and have often gone without food; I have been cold and naked. (2 Corinthians 11:23-27 NIV)
That’s quite a list; and it gives Paul a doctorate in “whatever’s.” What Paul is saying is we must never lose sight of God’s perspective on life, regardless of the trials, the temptations or the distractions.
Therefore, we must conduct ourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ. Simply put, it means to love God and love people. It means to do good works and share the good news in the name of Jesus Christ.
Today’s One Thing
And whatever you do, in word or deed, to everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the father through him. (Colossians 3:17 ESV)
The first “whatever” has to do with what you’re going through. This “whatever” has to do with what you’re going to do. And it’s all done in the name of the Lord Jesus. So, what are you going to do today for the gospel of Jesus Christ?
