Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.
For the month of May, Dr. Randy Carlson is giving us “Today’s Word for Your Life.” And as you can see from the above title, today’s word is TRUST.
Note that there are two occurrences with the word “all.” You are to trust in the Lord with ALL your heart. And you are to acknowledge Him, and ALL your ways. The word “all” in Hebrew is rather inclusive — besides meaning all, it can also mean the whole of, any, every, anything and everything. Take any of those words and drop them into this verse, and what have you got? Your whole heart. Acknowledge Him in every way, in any way. It doesn’t leave you a whole lot of wiggle room to do something other than to trust Him or to acknowledge Him.
Some of the translations for “all” are whatsoever, whosoever and continually. I particularly like the last two words, because it assigns a person, a who. And in this case that who can only be the Lord. And the word continually? It’s not just a matter of moving from event to event to event; there is the journey within the event. And the journey must belong to the LORD.
There’s a negative in this passage: “Do not lean on your own understanding.” The word lean can also mean trust in and to rest in. Is there anything in your “own understanding” that you rest in, or trust in? If it’s anything other than the Lord, don’t. You may have substantial gifts, talents, and understanding, but the Lord blessed you with those things, to be used for His glory.
Today’s One Thing
It’s going to be tough to trust the Lord with ALL your heart, and to acknowledge Him in all your ways, and to do so continually. But as we’ve learned from Dr. Randy Carlson, maybe it’s time to choose that right ONE THING and begin there. What’s ONE THING that would help you to pursue Him with all your heart and your ways?
