A Parent, Not a Best Friend

Miley Cyrus’ recent performance probably caused you to wonder aloud: What happened? The former “Hannah Montana” star surprised millions simply for the shock entertainment value or because she’s lost her way.

In either case, the incident likely was a subject of conversation in your home. The moment was a good opportunity to talk to your girls about decency and your boys about respecting women. Cyrus created a backlash with her actions, but the singer with her, Robin Thicke, deserved the same criticism for objectifying women.

Intentional families build a moral foundation with positive images and by avoiding the inappropriate content. But when your children are exposed, it’s important to use it as a life lesson. What kind of people are we? What kind of culture have we created? Are we really so bored, we need another shock to entertain us?

With your family, it’s important to talk about the influences of others. Encourage your sons and daughters to surround themselves with friends who have good morals. Monitor what they watch on television and online. Help them understand that character matters. Don’t sacrifice your reputation for the sake of a cheap thrill.

As a practical matter, Miley’s performance raises the question: Was she a spoiled child? Did anyone ever say no to her? We don’t know the answer, but in your family, someone has to shake up your children’s world when they make bad decisions. You have to be the adult. All the other girls might be wearing a sexy outfit, but not you. No means… no movies or music that will send the wrong messages to their heart and mind.

You’re not your children’s best friend. You’re their parent. They need your help navigating the mine fields in their impressionable lives.

30-Day Challenge

If you could do ONE THING and know that it would make a significant, lasting, possibly life-changing difference in your life, would you do it? Dr. Carlson shares the power of ONE THING and why you should get started doing your ONE THING today.
