4 Questions to Ask Yourself

Many times when we want to change our lives for the better, we focus on others. We think about the problems that others are causing us. And, it’s so much easier to try and fix One Thing in someone else than it is to take a good, hard look at ourselves.

This fable illustrates my point.

A pastor had a certain man in his congregation who had many obvious spiritual issues. Week after week the preacher would deliver a sermon that directly addressed the man’s problems. And every week, the man would shake his hand on the way out and say, “You really let them have it this week, Pastor!”

One Sunday there was a blizzard, and only two people showed up for church—the pastor and that man. The preacher was excited because now there could be no doubt about whom he was targeting with his message. But after the service, the man said, “Pastor? That was a great message. If only they had been here, you would have really let them have

Remember, only we can make our own lives better. As you’re identifying the One Thing that the Lords wants you to do today, keep these two points in mind:

  • Focus on the One Thing that you can do to bring about change in your life.
  • Ask God to show you how He sees you and how He would have you improve your life.

To help you identify your One Thing, consider these four questions:

  1. Is this truly One Thing I can do, or is it dependent on someone else’s actions or attitudes?
  2. Am I taking personal and sole responsibility for this intentional decision? (Romans 14:12)
  3. Have I sought counsel from Scripture? (Psalms 1:2)
  4. Have I asked God to give me wisdom about doing this? (James 1:5)

Looking within and seeing where you can grow is an essential step to a life of greater joy and fulfillment.
