If you’re a parent of a special-needs child, it’s highly likely you’ve been through an emotional roller-coaster. You never knew how much you could love a child…and how hard it could be to care for one.
Perhaps you’ve changed your focus from “Why?” to “What Now?” The balance of living for today and planning for tomorrow is tricky. If you keep an eye on the future, you’ll miss the beauty of today. If you dwell on the past, you’ll stay there emotionally.
You might find caring for child with special needs can lead to isolation. Don’t let it. If you’re finding yourself spiritually and emotionally drained, you should reach out to friends and family. Couples with special needs children often have relationship issues as well. They sometimes lose intimacy, wrestle with financial problems and blame each other during tough times.
To lessen the stress, talk to your spouse:
- Share insights about everything, with no topics off limits;
- Find what clears your mind and create time for romance;
- Work as a team in balancing your budget and planning for your needs;
- Don’t wallow in self-pity or point fingers;
- Enroll in an exercise program, at a community center or gym.
Many who find a balance in their life find the answer to the question, “Why?” Often, it’s “Because I’ve been blessed.”
