If you’re a new parent or just looking for some fresh insights, you’re in the right place. We’ve got some encouragement and heartfelt advice from experienced parents for you. Whether you’re facing sleepless nights with a newborn or navigating the turbulent teen years, I believe these stories and tips can help you. So, let’s explore how you can parent with intention, ensuring you’re present, loving, and impactful in your child’s life.

The Worst Kind of Parenting

Let me start with a stark warning about the most detrimental kind of parenting—being uninvolved and neglectful. The worst kind of parenting is when parents are disengaged and indifferent. It’s crucial to remember that being present and engaged is foundational to successful parenting. Your involvement can make all the difference in your child’s development and well-being.

Setting a Good Example

*Doug in Kansas shared a touching story about the importance of setting a positive example for our children. Doug recalled a time when he bought an extra sandwich for a homeless person, which deeply impacted his daughter. “Make sure that you’re always setting the example because they’re watching you all the time,” he advised.

Our actions speak louder than words.

Children learn by observing our behavior, so consistently model kindness, honesty, and integrity.

Patience and Presence

*Shel from Michigan brings a vital reminder about the value of patience and cherishing time with our kids. Reflecting on her experience as a single mom, she emphasized, “Just to be patient, and to enjoy the time while they’re little. My oldest is going to be a senior next year. The time goes by faster than you think.”

Time with your children is fleeting, and it’s essential to savor these moments. Being present, both physically and emotionally, helps build strong, lasting bonds with your children.

Forgiveness and Growth

*Leslie from Arkansas discussed the importance of forgiving parental mistakes and breaking negative cycles. She shared, “Even if your parents had made mistakes… forgive them because they don’t know that they are mistakes until after the fact.”

It’s easy to hold onto grudges, but it’s more beneficial to forgive and grow from past experiences. This allows you to create a healthier environment for your children, free from the baggage of previous generations.

Prioritizing Time with Children

As a busy realtor, one thing *Allison from Michigan said she wished her younger self had done differently as a parent was to spend more time with her daughter during her early years. “Make the time to put your child [on your calendar] … I wish I would have not allowed my clients to take over my schedule,” she admitted.

Prioritizing our children in a hectic schedule is challenging but necessary. Remember, our presence and attention are invaluable to their development and happiness.

As a parent, you’ve got to be present; you’ve got to be there.

Teaching Life Skills

*Donnie from Florida highlighted the importance of teaching practical life skills to your children. He wishes he had involved his kids more in everyday tasks like cooking and home maintenance. “We get so caught up in busy lives that we forget to take the time to teach our children,” he reflected.

Including your children in these activities not only teaches them essential skills but also provides opportunities for meaningful interaction and bonding.

Personal Stories of Change

Coming from a troubled past, *Gary from Arizona found redemption and purpose in living intentionally for Christ. “Now that I’m a grandfather, I feel like maybe I could be a father now because my selfishness is out of the way and God is right there showing me,” he shared.

Gary’s story reminds me of the transformative power of God’s love and the importance of intentionality in parenting. No matter your past, you can choose to make positive changes for your children’s future.

The Importance of Time

After moving to be closer to her grandson, *Catrina from New Mexico reflected on the importance of cherishing every moment. “You just think, ‘Oh, they’ll grow old,’… You never know when those little ones might be gone,” she advised.

Time with your children and grandchildren is irreplaceable, so make the most of it by being present and engaged.
